Starting at the end of this season (2009), an expired player can no longer be traded. They remain on your roster to allow you to franchise if applicable, but the contract is considered over at the end of the regular season for non-playoff teams and the playoffs for those that qualify. This means you have to trade the player by the trade deadline or they need to be franchised or they go into the draft.
Since the rule was never specified, it does not effect trades currently completed and any future trade until the start of the season. This goes into effect at the end of this season.
